New method to treat heart blockage
Times News Network Thursday, September 4, 2003 Indraprasth - Despite the use of angioplasty to clear blockage of arteries for a quarter of a century, the technique has not been able to solve the problem of its recurrence. Restenosis or re-blockage continues to be a problem. The patient often has no choice but to go in for an open- heart surgery. In a recent issue of the British Medical Journal, Dr B. Bhargava of AIIMS along with three co- authors from other countries, has focused on a new method called drug-coated stents. Use of stents or scaffolds inside the artery has remarkably reduced the possibility of recurring blockage to zero to five per cent. "It makes treatement of heart diseases much simpler and less invasive," Dr Bhargava said. The new mode of treatment, the paper argues, will drastically reduce the need to go through major surgeries. In the near future heart surgeries will be a rare event with the popularity of the drug-coated stents. The problem, however is the technique is highly expensive. One drug-coated stent will cost Rs. 90,000 and even more.
