Asprins
2004-05-10 19:04:08
Hello,
Can someone tell me if it's true that taking an asprin everyday brings health benefits? I remember one of my friends telling me it thins your blood. Is this true? Personaly I thought taking an asprin everyday would be bad for you and possibly lead to a dependency. Thanks.

One may as well begin with Krell's letter to uk.people.health:

My mother takes an aspirin a day, upon recommendation, to prevent heart attack and strokes. However, these are EC Aspirin (not normal over the counter aspirin) and unless I'm mistaken, I've always believed these to be a sort of 'slow-release' version due to the coating. Regular aspirin, on a daily basis, could cause stomach bleeding, brain bleeding, and kidney problems (including failure). Not to mention it doesn't mix well with other medicines and supplements. And of course many people with other conditions (asthma for example) could have a seriously adverse reaction. -- Lee J. Moore A myth is a religion in which no one any longer believes

They are supposed not to dissolve in the stomach and so not cause ulcers. Not sure that there's much evidence for that, though. > >Regular aspirin, on a daily basis, could cause stomach bleeding, brain >bleeding, and kidney problems (including failure). There's tons of stuff on (low dose) aspirin in cardiovascular disease here (although it's aimed at health care professionals more than patients) http://www.jr2.ox.ac.uk/bandolier/booth/booths/aspirin.htm -- Paul
