question from a layman about antibiotics
2003-12-27 20:46:16
Hello all,
I have to take antibiotics (amoxil) three times a day during ten days to treat a very painful tooth-gum infection. Now, I remember having read many years ago that a certain substance (or food or supplement or whatsoever) inhibits the action of antibiotics. Was it milk? Vitamin C? Calcium? Or something else? What is good to take along with antibiotics? What is not advisable? Hopefully not milk. I would appreciate any piece of advice that would help me speed up and enhance this treatment. Raymond

The milk problem is associated with Tetracycline antibiotics, not
Penicillins like Amoxil. Some Penicillins are more sensitive to stomach acid than others, but Amoxil does not really present a problem and can be taken at any time. Hi Raymond Avoid milk and citrus juices as they bind amoycillin and render it inactive. Vitamin C administration is no problem as long as it is atleast 1hr after taking the antibiotic tablet.
